A Moroccan migrant in Germany is in custody after murdering a 55-year-old man at a train station in Uelzen. The 18-year-old migrant, who has not been named, reportedly committed the crime just hours after being released by police for another violent crime.

According to a press release by the Police Inspectorate of Uelzen, the crime occurred on July 14 at approximately 1:30 am. For no discernible reason, the migrant had pushed or kicked victim down the stairs of the Hundertwasser train station, resulting in the 55-year-old man incurring a traumatic brain injury.

Witnesses immediately called police, but emergency medical personnel were unable to stabilize the victim and he died on site.

The Moroccan, who arrived in Germany as a refugee in 2021, attempted to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended by Federal Police and taken into provisional custody under an investigation of manslaughter.

Disturbingly, the crime was committed just hours after the migrant had been released from police custody for other offenses.

On July 13, the 18-year-old had come under police scrutiny multiple times, first for pickpocketing, and then for a violent assault on another individual at the same train station where the murder occurred. Police arrested the migrant after the assault but were only able to keep him in custody for 7 hours before turning him loose at approximately 9 pm.

Just four and a half hours later, the Moroccan murdered the 55-year-old. The two had no past relationship or interactions.

The suspect is refusing to cooperate with police, and has not spoken with investigators while in custody. Police are currently searching for additional witnesses to the incident.
